Overview
Land Structure delivered the soft landscaping and fencing for a new university building at ARU Peterborough. Working on a tight site that students were already using, our team installed large specimen trees, shrub planting, wildflower and amenity turf, and new fencing. The result is a green, welcoming setting that complements the building and matches the original design.
Challenges
The site was compact and sat within an area already in daily use by students. Other trades were working at the same time, so every delivery, crane lift and install had to be carefully timed.
The design also called for large specimen trees that needed to go in before the paths and hard surfaces were laid, at a point when the finished levels were not yet in place. On top of this came
the usual building site pressures: logistics and pressure to finish on time.

The Solution
We planned for the logistics from the outset, working alongside the other trades to agree deliveries, lifts and install timings. To get the trees in ahead of the surfaces, our team formed the tree pits in advance using shuttering. This kept each pit open and correctly shaped while the levels around it were brought up.

The Result
The university now has a fully landscaped outdoor space that complements the new building and delivers the original design, without any major difficulties along the way. The project has also strengthened our working relationship with the client.
